While working in Arles in southern France, Vincent van Gogh painted three versions of one of his most famous compositions, The Bedroom (Art Institute of Chicago, Van Gogh Museum, Musee d'Orsay). Dr. Brettell will interpret the painting and its repetitions first in terms of Van Gogh's own musings about them in letters, then in terms of his other works made around them, and lastly in terms of psychoanalytic and philosophical ideas of the past century.
Place: Luther Hall, Taft Museum of Art (316 Pike Street, Cincinnati, OH 45202)
Lecture Cost: $10 for members of the Woman's Art Club of Cincinnati, patrons of the Woman's Art Club of Cincinnati Foundation, and members of the Taft Museum; $20 general public (includes museum admission). Call (513) 684-4515 if you have difficulties registering online.
Meet Dr. Brettell at the Barn before the lecture, enjoying Provencal cuisine and fine wines, along with a visit to Van Gogh's bedroom recreated in the Loft! Pre-Party reservations are $50/person.
